In-Depth Information
Needless to say, the views from the hut are excellent, including not only the namesake
glacier below but, if you are blessed with clear weather, also the peaks of the Main Divide,
crowned by Aoraki/Mt Cook. From Mueller Hut it's a 30-minute rock scramble to an out-
crop, marked by a large cairn, just below Mt Ollivier (1933m). This was the first peak
climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary, who trained in this area for his eventual summit of Everest.

Determinedly finding its feet after the earthquake of 22 February 2011 - one of NZ's worst
natural disasters - this most English of NZ cities is adding a modern and innovative layer to
its damaged heritage heart. Punts still glide gently down the Avon River, and the Botanic
Gardens and Hagley Park remain among NZ's finest public spaces, but an energetic entre-
preneurial edge is also evident, cutting across the potholes and springing up in the cracks.
4 Sleeping & Eating
Much inner-city accommodation was lost in the 2011 earthquake, the result of which is that
most of your options will be dotted around the inner suburbs, with some conveniently
placed on the airport side of the city. Likewise, this is where many eating and drinking op-
tions can also be found.
