In-Depth Information
WHAT TO BRING
Come prepared for strong winds, heavy rain and even snow in any season (then rejoice if the
sky is clear and Aoraki/Mt Cook comes into view!). Some trampers take an ice axe, al-
though crampons and rope are usually unnecessary during summer. Trekking poles are re-
commended and may be hired from Alpine Guides in the village.
MAPS & BROCHURES
The park is covered by NewTopo map Aoraki Mt Cook 1:65,000, which will prove helpful
for trip planning. Numerous short walks from the village are covered in DOC's brochure
Walks in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The map covering the Mueller Route is NZTo-
po50 BX15 (Aoraki/Mount Cook). See also DOC's detailed Mueller Hut Route brochure.
HUTS
There are 17 huts in the park, most of which can be accessed only by experienced alpinists.
For overnight stays in Mueller Hut you need to sign in and out at the Aoraki/Mt Cook Na-
tional Park Visitor Centre, where you can pay your hut fees. Annual hut passes are not valid.
There are gas cookers in the hut.
INFORMATION SOURCES
The Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park Visitor Centre ( 03-435 1186; www.doc.govt.nz; 1 Larch

advice, there are excellent displays on the natural and mountaineering history of the park. A
fantastic place to while away a day in bad weather.
