8 Getting to/from the Tramp
The western end of the track is at Aickens on SH73, 30 minutes north of Arthur's Pass vil-
lage.
You can arrange to be dropped off by various passing bus services, including Atomic
Shuttles ( Click here ) and West Coast Shuttle ( Click here ) . Mountain House Shuttle ( Click
here ) , based at Mountain House YHA, provides tramper transport around the national park.
The eastern end of the track is Windy Point, on SH7, 7km west of the Hope Bridge and
almost halfway between Maruia Springs and the turn-off to Hanmer Springs.
East West Coaches ( Click here ) provides drop-offs at both the track start and finish on its
Westport to Christchurch route, with services running daily only when seasonal demand dic-
tates. It may be possible to arrange transport to the trailheads with Hanmer Springs Adven-
ture Centre ( Click here ) , depending on its workload. Nelson Lakes Shuttles ( Click here ) also
stops at Windy Point, on demand, on its runs between the Lewis Pass, St Arnaud and Nel-
son.
Trampers with their own vehicles can avail themselves of the services of Boyle River
Outdoor Education Centre, near the southern end of the track. They will drop you off in
your car at the track start ($22), then return your car to Boyle where it is stored until your
return ($7 per day).
The last day's walk takes most trampers five hours, so an early start is necessary if you
hope to catch one of the buses. It is best to be at the highway, ready to flag down the bus, 30
minutes before it is due to arrive.
