8 Getting There & Away
Karamea Express ( 03-782 6757; info@karamea-express.co.nz ) links Karamea and Westport
($35, two hours, 7.40am Monday to Friday May to September, plus Saturday from October
to April). It also services Kohaihai on the Heaphy Track twice daily during peak summer
periods, and runs shuttles to Wangapeka Rd.
Westport is serviced by InterCity ( 03-789 7819; www.intercitycoach.co.nz ) and Atomic
Shuttles ( 03-349 0697; www.atomictravel.co.nz ) , which pass through on their Nelson to Fox
Glacier runs.

This is a small hamlet of resorts and restaurants - plus the DOC area office - all clustered
around Kerr Bay at the northern end of Lake Rotoiti.

Kerr Bay Camp
( www.doc.govt.nz; unpowered/powered sites per person $10/15) This beautifully situated DOC
campsite with hot showers and a laundry is perennially popular with trampers as well as NZ
holidaymakers. It's an inspiring base for your adventures, but do book in advance. Overflow
camping is available at DOC's nearby West Bay campsite, which is more basic.

Travers-Sabine Lodge
( 03-521 1887; www.nelsonlakes.co.nz; Main Rd; dm/d $26/62; ) This modern lodge is a
short walk to Lake Rotoiti, and is inexpensive, clean and comfortable. The owners are ex-
perienced adventurers themselves, so tips come as standard. Tramping equipment and snow-
shoes are available for hire.

Nelson Lakes Motels

board-and-batten units offer all the creature comforts, including kitchenettes and Sky TV.
