This pleasant and active city is a great place from which to set off for tramps, or to recuper-
ate in after finishing tramps. It has plentiful supplies of every description, including an enti-
cing array of excellent local produce such as fruit, wine and craft beer.

Nelson has a stack of hostels and other budget to midrange accommodation options. Its food
scene runs the gamut, and is particularly friendly to self-caterers.

tiny but much-loved Trampers is hard to beat for a homely environment. The enthusiastic
owner is a keen tramper and cyclist, and provides comprehensive local information and free
bikes.

) A tidy, purpose-built, central hostel with high-quality facilities including two well-or-

& units $60-168; ) The closest option to town: convenient, well-maintained, clean, but
cramped (although the motel units are pretty good). Limited campsites by the creek out
back.
