In-Depth Information
DOC brochures include Angelus Hut Tracks & Routes, Travers-Sabine Circuit and Walks in
Nelson Lakes National Park .
HUTS & CAMPING
There are 22 huts within the national park, most dotted at convenient intervals along the
main track network. Eight of these are Serviced huts ( www.doc.govt.nz; $15) , equipped with
mattresses, water supply, toilets, washbasins, and heating with fuel available. The rest are
Standard huts ( www.doc.govt.nz; $5) , Basic huts ( www.doc.govt.nz; free) or Bivvies
( www.doc.govt.nz; free) . There are no cooking facilities in the huts; all trampers should carry
stoves. Hut tickets must be pre-purchased from the Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre.
Backcountry hut tickets and passes are valid at the park's huts, with the exception of the
relatively luxurious, serviced Angelus Hut (28 bunks) from late November through to the
end of April. During this peak period the hut and the nearby campsites ($10) must be
booked in advance online or through DOC visitor centres nationwide.
Camping is permitted throughout the park. There is a fee of one Backcountry hut ticket
for camping close to Serviced huts. Camping around Standard/Basic huts and away from
huts is free.
A short stroll from St Arnaud and a stone's throw from Lake Rotoiti, DOC's lovely Kerr
Bay Camp (powered/unpowered site $15/10) has bushy nooks for campervans and decent
grass for tenters. It also has hot showers, a cooking shelter and laundry facilities during
summer. Further round the lake, DOC's more basic West Bay Camp ($6) is open mid-
December to Easter. Both camps have to be pre-booked from mid-December through to
Easter online or at the Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre.
At the northern end of Lake Rotoroa, DOC's Lake Rotoroa Camp ($6) has toilets, water
and ferocious sandflies.
