In-Depth Information
HUTS & CAMPING
There are four huts along this route, two of which (Mt Arthur and Salisbury Lodge) are re-
commended overnight stops. Both are Serviced huts ( www.doc.govt.nz; $15) , although only
Salisbury has gas cookers, so be sure to carry a stove. There are numerous other huts on and
around the tablelands, ranging from Serviced to Basic, along with rock shelters, which are
free. Camping is also permitted and is free unless you wish to camp within 50m of a hut - in
that case you will have to pay half the hut fee and make use of the hut facilities during the
day only. Backcounty hut tickets or passes can be bought online or from any DOC visitor
centre.

The Tramp
Day 1: Flora Car Park to Mt Arthur Hut
1½ HOURS, 3.6KM, 370M ASCENT
This is a short day's tramp, so those with energy, strength and good weather may consider
combining it with the challenging but entirely possible climb to the summit of Mt Arthur , a
three- to four-hour return trip from Mt Arthur Hut. With an early rise, it's also possible to
bag the peak on day two, which avoids some backtracking, thus shaving off one to two
hours.
Arriving at Flora car park deposits you at an elevation of 940m, where views of Mt Ar-
thur can be had from a shelter complete with interpretive displays.
