WHAT TO BRING
Wasps can be a real problem from January through March, especially in the grassy flats at
the eastern end, near the Rolling River car park. Pack antihistamine if you are allergic to
their stings.
The huts do not have gas cookers, so carry a stove.
MAPS & BROCHURES
This tramp is covered by NZTopo50 maps BQ22 (Karamea) , BQ23 (Wangapeka Saddle)
and BQ24 (Tapawera) , as well as NewTopo Wangapeka Track 1:55,000.
HUTS & CAMPING
There are seven huts along the track. Five are Standard huts ( www.doc.govt.nz; $5) : Belltown
Manunui, Taipo, Helicopter Flat, Stone Hut and Kings Creek. Cecil King's is a Basic hut
( www.doc.govt.nz ) , and there are two emergency shelters either side of Little Wanganui
Saddle. There are few flat places suitable for camping (which is free); your best bet is near
the huts where there are often clearings and toilet facilities, although note that you will have
