It's possible to tramp in Kahurangi all year round. Easter is traditionally the most popular
time to walk the Heaphy Track, while late February through March is a particularly good
time to tackle tracks throughout the park.
INFORMATION SOURCES
The DOC Nelson Regional Visitor Centre ( Click here ) , located within the i-SITE, is the re-
gion's primary DOC centre. Information and bookings are also available at DOC Motueka
Area Office ( Click here ).
Closer to the Golden Bay end of the track, hut tickets, bookings and other track informa-
tion can be obtained from DOC Golden Bay Area Office ( Click here ) and the friendly little
Golden Bay i-SITE ( Click here ) , which also has copies of their indispensable yellow tourist
map.
At the West Coast end your port of call should be Karamea Information & Resource
Centre ( 03-782 6652; www.karameainfo.co.nz; Market Cross; 9am-5pm daily Jan-May, 9am-1pm
Sat & Sun only Jun-Dec) , an excellent, community-owned centre with all necessary track ser-
vices (including hut tickets and bookings) and general local low down.
GUIDED TRAMPS
Bush & Beyond ( 03-528 9054; www.bushandbeyond.co.nz ) offers a guided six-day Heaphy
Track package ($1749).
Kahurangi Guided Walks ( 03-525 7177; www.kahurangiwalks.co.nz ) runs small-group,
five-day Heaphy tramps ($1500), and popular one-day options ($150).
