MAPS & BROCHURES
This track is so well trodden that a topographical map isn't essential for navigation. The
map within DOC's Abel Tasman Coast Track brochure provides sufficient detail. However,
NewTopo Abel Tasman 1:55,000 will give you the lay of the land.
HUTS, CAMPING & LODGES
There are eight huts in the park. Anchorage, Bark Bay, Awaroa and Whariwharangi lie along
the Coast Track and are designated Great Walk huts ($32) . These have bunks, tables,
benches and heating, flush toilets, and washbasins with cold water only. There are no cook-
ing facilities or lighting. There are also 19 designated Great Walk campsites
( www.doc.govt.nz; $14) .
As the Abel Tasman Track is a Great Walk, all huts and campsites must be booked in ad-
vance year-round. Bookings can be made online through Great Walks Bookings ( 0800
694 732; www.greatwalks.co.nz ) or at any DOC visitor centre.
DOC hut tickets and annual passes cannot be used on the track, and there is a two-night
limit on staying in huts or campsites. The exception is Totaranui, which has a one-night lim-
it for trampers. Penalty fees of up to 100% will apply to those who do not have a valid
booking, and you may be required to leave the park.
Moored permanently in Anchorage Bay, Aquapackers ( 0800 430 744;
www.aquapackers.co.nz; dm/d incl breakfast $70/195) is a specially converted 13m catamaran
providing unusual but buoyant backpacker accommodation for 22. Facilities are basic but
decent; prices include bedding, dinner and breakfast. Bookings essential.
