the park include the whio (blue duck), the yellow-crowned parakeet, kaka and, occasionally,
weka.
8 Planning
WHEN TO TRAMP
The Pelorus and Aniseed valleys receive some of the highest rainfall in Mt Richmond Forest
Park, and streams may become impassable in heavy rain. The track is therefore best tramped
from October to April.
MAPS & BROCHURES
This track is covered by NZTopo50 BQ26 (Nelson) and BQ27 (Rai Valley). The Pelorus
Track brochure can be downloaded from DOC's website.
HUTS & CAMPING
All huts in Mt Richmond Forest Park are graded Standard huts ( www.doc.govt.nz; $5) , in-
cluding Captain Creek, Middy Creek, Rocks, Roebuck, Browning and Hacket).
Near the Maungatapu Rd trailhead, camping can be had at Pelorus Bridge Campground
and Cafe. At the Dun Mountain Track trailhead is Brook Valley Holiday Park ( 03-548
0399; www.brookholidaypark.co.nz; 600 Brook St; campsites per person $17, cabins from $52) , in a
rural location around 4km from central Nelson.

8 Towns & Facilities
The most popular area of Mt Richmond Forest Park is Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, 18km
west of Havelock, where SH6 crosses the Pelorus River. As well as nature trails and swim-
ming holes, the reserve is home to Pelorus Bridge Campground & Cafe. This fully serviced
DOC campsite is a picturesque gem, with hot showers, a smart kitchen and large deck with
river views. The cafe has great home-cooked food and basic provisions.
