8 Getting There & Away
Although Wellington airport has an international terminal, it is largely a domestic enterprise.
Air New Zealand ( 474 8950, 0800 737 000; www.airnewzealand.co.nz; cnr Lambton Quay & Grey
St; 9am-5pm Mon-Fri, 10am-1pm Sat) offers flights between Wellington and most domestic
centres, including Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown and Nelson. Flights start as low as
$59, booked well in advance or during promotions. Jetstar ( 0800 800 995;
www.jetstar.com ) flies between Wellington and Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown,
with bargain fares available. Soundsair ( 520 3080, 0800 505 005; www.soundsair.com ) flies
frequently between Wellington and Picton, Nelson and Blenheim. Air2there ( 904 5130,
0800 777 000; www.air2there.com ) flies between Wellington and Blenheim.
Wellington is a bus-travel hub, with connections north to Auckland and all major towns in
between. InterCity ( 385 0520; www.intercity.co.nz ) buses depart from platform 9 at the train
station. Tickets are sold at the InterCity ticket window in the train station; there are good
savings when booked online. Naked Bus ( 0900 625 33; www.nakedbus.com ) also services
major North Island destinations, with buses departing from opposite the Amora Hotel in
