Almost all street names in town are inspired by Shakespearian characters; the town was
named after William Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon in England. Stratford
is on SH3, about 40km southeast of New Plymouth and 18km from the Plateau on Mt
Taranaki.
