In-Depth Information
Just south of the hut is a benched track heading southeast. This is the beginning of the des-
cent along Rain Gauge Spur . The track is well marked though steep and slippery, especially
during wet weather. It should take about one hour to reach the valley and the recently up-
graded Atiwhakatu Hut (28 bunks).
The track from the hut to Holdsworth Lodge is well defined and level. Jumbo Creek and
Holdsworth Creek used to pose problems in wet weather - in fact they were downright dan-
gerous. Nowadays they are bridged, making for an all-weather track. Soon after the bridge
across Holdsworth Creek, you come to a junction. The trail you can see climbing to the west
(right) rises steeply to Mountain House shelter (one to 1½ hours).
Stay on the main track, which is well formed and runs along the stream, past a small
gorge, to Donnelly Flat . This wooded camping area is 1km from Holdsworth Lodge. A
15-minute loop track at the flat passes through tall stands of podocarp forest - rimu, matai
and kahikatea. The walk from Donnelly Flat to Holdsworth Lodge backtracks along the
starting route for part of the way. It's about 15 minutes to the lodge from the junction with
Gentle Annie Track.

Summary This classic Tararua tramp involves no arduous alpine crossings and follows
peaceful river valleys most of the way.
Tararua Forest Park dishes up plenty of rugged and genuinely dangerous tramping territory,
but this track is perfect for less-experienced trampers who may be unsure about crossing
