In-Depth Information
The Kaitoke trailhead is a 30-minute walk down Marchant Rd off SH2 north of Upper
Hutt. The Tranz Metro ( Click here ) train passes this way between Wellington and the Wair-
arapa, with the closest stop Maymorn, north of Upper Hutt, but it's still a 12km trek to the
Kaitoke car park. Unless you want to leg it, your best bet for a transfer will be Hutt & City
Taxis ( 570 0057; www.huttcitytaxis.co.nz ) .

Summary An old favourite of local trampers, this circuit includes nights at two scenic huts
above the bushline, and a day following alpine ridges.
The Holdsworth recreation area, where the Lodge is located, is a beautiful spot to begin any
tramp in the forest park. It is surrounded by rugged hills and graced by the rushing waters of
Atiwhakatu Stream, which has brisk but brilliant swimming holes.
Although you can cover this route in two days, it is probably a better idea to schedule
three, just in case bad weather intervenes and forces you to sit out a day in one of the alpine
huts.
