MAPS & BROCHURES
The tramp is covered by NZTopo50 BJ32 (Pipiriki), BH33 (Retaruke) and BJ33 (Raetihi). A
simplified map is included in DOC's Mangapurua/Kaiwhakauka Tracks brochure, but this
is not suitable for navigation.
CAMPING & LODGES
There are no huts along these tracks but there are plenty of campsites, with Whakahoro the
only one you need to pay for ($10).
At Whakahoro you will also find Blue Duck Station ( www.blueduckstation.co.nz; s/d from
$45/95; ) , a wildlife-focused outfit with a cafe.
If you fancy spending another night or two on the river, with a roof over your head, the
Bridge to Nowhere Lodge ( Click here ) can oblige, situated downstream on the way to
Pipiriki. Your jetboat operator can drop you off.
8 Getting to/from the Tramp
Whakahoro is reached by road from SH4, turning off at either Owhango or Raurimu.
National Park ( Click here ) is a good base for setting off from for both Whakahoro or
Ruatiti, as it is well serviced with lodging and shuttle-bus services.
From the end of the track at Mangapurua Landing, you can jetboat out to Pipiriki with
Whanganui River Adventures ( Click here ) . Blue Duck Station also runs Wild Journeys
( www.wildjourneys.co.nz ) , a jetboat service that can collect you and return you to Whakahoro
($160 per person; minimum three people).
From Pipiriki you can either head out 28km east to Raetihi, Ohakune or National Park;
Whanganui River Adventures runs shuttles to all three. Otherwise, you can return to Whan-
ganui, 79km south. This route is serviced by the mail run courtesy of Whanganui Tours
( www.whanganuitours.co.nz ) , which leaves Pipiriki around 4pm. It also runs transport in the
other direction, from Whanganui, leaving 7am, to Pipiriki (one way/return $30/63).
