appeal of many other tracks, especially those in Tongariro National Park, when its isolated
nature is combined with a jetboat tour of the Whanganui River at the end, the Matem-
ateaonga Track becomes one of NZ's great bush adventures.
A return day walk from Kohi Saddle to Omaru Hut (four hours total) provides an excel-
lent sampler of the track, with fantastic views, interesting plant life and a pleasant lunch spot
at the hut.

MAPS & BROCHURES
The tramp is covered by NZTopo50 BJ31 (Strathmore) and BJ32 (Pipiriki). A simplified
map is included in DOC's Matemateaonga Track brochure, but this is not suitable for navig-
ation.
HUTS, CAMPING & LODGES
The Matemateaonga Track sports four Serviced Huts ( www.doc.govt.nz; $15) - Omaru, Pouri,
Ngapurua and Puketotara - none of which have cooking facilities. Free camping is permit-
ted throughout the park, but particularly encouraged at sites where DOC has provided toi-
lets.
