ford Plateau. From the lodge turn downhill and follow the 4WD track to North Egmont Vis-
itor Centre, passing the giant TV transmission tower on your descent.
For the low track from Dawson Falls, follow signs for Waingongoro Hut. Before reaching
the hut, take the left at the track junction and cross the swing bridge before following the
track to the Te Popo car park.
The route continues across Pembroke Rd as Curtis Falls Track . It's a difficult three- to
four-hour tramp to Maketawa Hut, and includes climbing in and out of five gorges and
crossing many unbridged streams. Although most trampers push on to North Egmont, a nice
option is to stay at Maketawa Hut (16 bunks), which includes a large kitchen, wood fire and
an outdoor deck where you can sit and admire views of Mt Taranaki. This is also a great
base if you want to scale the summit. The final leg to North Egmont from the hut is a 1½-
hour tramp along a forested track.

cano is likely to be a major highlight of your NZ tramping adventures.
The majestic Mt Taranaki is the central point of the 335-sq-km Egmont National Park. Ap-
proximately 130,000 years old, it is the park's most recent volcanic peak. It last erupted
around 200 years ago - the mountain has been quiet for a while but is not considered ex-
tinct.
