In-Depth Information
North Egmont Visitor Centre. Those without transport may hitch to Egmont Village, the
turn-off to Egmont Rd on SH3, but it will prove harder to get a ride up the mountain from
there.
Pembroke Rd extends for 18km from Stratford to the Plateau (1140m), on the eastern side
of the volcano. Manaia Rd is 15km southwest of Stratford, on the Opunake Rd just north of
Kaponga, and it runs for 8km to Dawson Falls.
There is no scheduled public transport to Egmont National Park but several local trans-
port operators will take you there, including Kiwi Outdoors Centre ( 03-758 4152;
www.outdoorgurus.co.nz ) , which specialises in tramper transport and charges $50 return to
North Egmont (less for more people) and $55 to Dawson Falls (minimum four people).
Cruise NZ Tours ( 497 3908, 0800 688 687) runs a daily service that departs New Ply-
mouth at 7.30am and returns from North Egmont Visitor Centre at 4.30pm (one-way/return
$30/45). It also runs on demand for the Pouakai Crossing. Eastern Taranaki Experience (
06-765 7482; www.eastern-taranaki.co.nz ) provides transport from Stratford to North Egmont
($80) and Dawson Falls ($50). Taranaki Tours ( 0800 886 877) also provides park service,
