In-Depth Information
This track partially follows the most popular short walk in the park, the two-hour return
walk to Lake Waikareiti. The whole Ruapani Circuit can be completed in a day (six hours),
but with just a few hours' extra walking - or a row across the lake - an overnight stop in
this beautiful place is there for the taking.
The forest along the way is consistently lovely, especially the profusion of neinei (pine-
apple scrub, Dracopyhllum latifolium ), and NZ's tallest species of tree, the kahikatea.
There's also plenty of bird life in the midst, including kaka, kakariki, and the inquisitive
North Island robin.
The Ruapani Circuit Track can be completed in either direction, although it is most tra-
versed anti-clockwise, starting on Waikareiti Track, just northwest of DOC's National Park
Visitor Centre at Aniwaniwa.
