The track, which is well benched and easy to follow, can be completed in either direction,
although by starting from Onepoto you put the steep climb up the spectacular Panekiri Bluff
behind you in the first few hours. Walking in the opposite direction you'll need an extra
hour from Waiopaoa Hut to Panekire Hut, but then it will take less time from Panekire Hut
to the end of the trail at Onepoto.

HUTS, CAMPING & BOOKINGS
The Lake Waikaremoana Track has five Great Walk huts ($32) along the track: Panekire,
Waiopaoa, Marauiti, Waiharuru and Whanganui. Each has a wood-burning stove, water sup-
ply, cooking benches and vault toilets as well as bunks with mattresses. Note there are no
cooking facilities so you need to bring a stove.
There are five designated Great Walk campsites ($14) : one at Waiopaoa and Waiharuru
huts, as well as Korokoro, Maraunui and Tapuaenui. These have grassy sites, cooking shel-
