History
It is thought that the crews of canoes carrying early Polynesian settlers to NZ rested on the
Coromandel Peninsula during their epic journey. In 1769 Captain Cook sailed into a rugged
little inlet on the eastern shore of the peninsula. He raised the British flag over NZ for the
first time and named the spot Mercury Bay (after the planet that appeared in the sky that
