West Coast

From Kohaihai at the end of the Heaphy Track, to Jackson Bay in the south, stretches
around 600km of wild and woolly coastline, sculpted by the elements into crazy rock forma-
tions such as Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks.
Wildlife
With around 90% of its land lying within the conservation estate, the West Coast is a haven
for wildlife, especially birds. Highlights include the white heron sanctuary at Whataroa and
cute kiwi chicks in Franz Josef's West Coast Wildlife Centre.
History
Explore old mining and milling routes like Charming Creek Walkway and Mahinapua Walk-
way, and watch the coast's pioneering history come to life at places like Denniston, Shanty
