Taranaki, Whanganui & Around Wellington
National Parks
Steeped in Maori lore, lush Whanganui National Park is one of NZ's most isolated, interest-
ing parks. Mt Taranaki (Egmont National Park) is picture-perfect with fabulous tramping.
Coastal Scenery
Hit Surf Hwy 45 south of New Plymouth for black-sand beaches and gnarly breaks. Whan-
ganui offers remote and storm-buffeted beaches; the Horowhenua District has acres of
empty brown sand.
Capital City
Compact, cool and creative, Wellington is home to Te Papa museum and the internationally
flavoured City Gallery. It's also NZ's most hospitable city with scores of hip cafes and res-
taurants and a revolutionary craft beer scene.
