Volcanoes
The three steaming, occasionally erupting volcanoes at the heart of the North Island are a
beguiling sight. Centrepieces of Tongariro National Park, they can be skied in winter and
tramped the rest of the year.
Lakes
In Taupo, NZ's mightiest river is born from its greatest lake. Aquatic pursuits such as kayak-
ing, sailing and fishing abound. In remote Te Urewera National Park, the magical, mystical
lakes of Waikaremoana and Waikareiti are waiting to be explored.
