Filtering is also acceptable with giardia-rated filters, which are widely available from out-
door gear retailers and will also remove crypto. Compact battery-powered purifiers are also
available that kill most waterborne bacteria and viruses using UV light.
If you can't boil, filter or purify water it should be treated chemically. Iodine is effective
and is available in tablet form, but follow the directions carefully and remember that too
much iodine can be harmful. Iodine should be avoided by pregnant women and people with
thyroid complaints.
