Plan Your Trip
Clothing, Equipment &
Food
Careful planning will help you determine what clothing, equipment and food
is indispensable, and what will prove a burden in your already brimming
backpack. Make sure you devote adequate time to this phase of trip plan-
ning, and sample your pack-load before you set off.
Tips for Packing Light
A Consider weight when purchasing your hiking clothes and equipment.
A Take only the food and fuel you need, plus one or two days spare in case you are
delayed by bad weather.
A Plan your water fills, accounting for availability en route.
A Beyond a sensible set of clothing for daytime and night, you need not take anything
more.
A Don't take jeans: they're heavy, especially when wet.
A Limit your toiletries (miniature travel packs are ideal); weight obsessives have even
been known to snap their toothbrushes in half!
A Repackage all foodstuffs into lightweight plastic.
A Share gear - if you're tramping in a pair or a group, share your stove, food, tooth-
paste, first-aid kit… everything you can.
Clothing
When buying clothes for tramping consider their weight, warmth, fit, breathability and, for
outer layers, their ability to keep you dry. Never underestimate the wide range of daily tem-
peratures that can occur in New Zealand, particularly in alpine country where you can easily
wake to brilliant sunshine and go to bed in a snowstorm. Always be prepared for bad weather.
