respectable women. They were described in novels and plays in a very romantic light, as
the paragon of all womanly virtues, even of chastity, as in one play where one who has a
young lover is persuaded to marry an old samurai to free the young man from her influen-
ce. When he tries to get his former mistress to continue their old relationship with him, he
is summarily rejected.
