sites used by life-history stages of key species (e.g. limpets, sea mammals, marine
birds), archaeological interest, suitability for various forms of fi shing (e.g. traditional
subsistence, commercial), and suitability for various recreational (e.g. snorkeling,
whale watching) and tourism activities. The relative importance of each factor for
each interest group was determined in planning sessions. Taking all the results into
account, fi ve higher-level maps were produced: natural value of the marine environ-
ment (NVM - aggregating all interest groups' values related to biodiversity, rarity,
crucial habitats such as nursery areas; Figure 10.15a), natural value of the coastal
environment (NVC - endemic coastal species including seabirds, habitat suitable

recreational activity value (RAV) for areas around Asinara Island (island land area is shown in the center in grey). Lighter
shades represent higher value. (d) Final zoning plan for the Asinara Island National Marine Reserve. A1: no-entry, no-take

inset map shows the location of the reserve in relation to the mainland of Italy. (From Begon et al., 2006, after Villa et al.,
