Dominican Landscapes
If wealth was measured by landscape, the DR would be among the richest countries in
the Americas. Sharing the island of Hispaniola, the second-largest island in the Carib-
bean (after Cuba), it's a dynamic country of high mountains, fertile valleys and
watered plains, and an amazing diversity of ecosystems. The rich landscape is
matched by an equally rich biodiversity with over 5600 species of plants and close to
500 vertebrate species on the island, many of these endemic.
One of the coldest parts of the country is Reservo Científica Valle Nuevo, southeast of Con-
stanza on the way to San Jose de Ocoa, with temperatures as low as -8°C and vegetation similar
to the European Alps.
