Baseball: A Dominican Passion
Not just the USA's game, beĆsbol is an integral part of the Dominican social and cul-
tural landscape. So much so that Dominican ballplayers that have made good in the
US are without doubt the most popular and revered figures in the country. Over 400
Dominicans have played in the major leagues (in 2013, nearly 100 out of a total of 856
players were Dominican-born), including stars like David Ortiz, Albert Pujols, Robin-
son Cano, Sammy Sosa and Juan Marichal, the only Dominican to be inducted into
the Hall of Fame.
The movie Sugar tells the story of a young Dominican baseball prospect drafted to play in the
US minor leagues, and the loneliness and dislocation he and other players experience.
