Music & Dance
Life in the Dominican Republic seems to move to a constant, infectious rhythm, and
music has always been an important part of the country's heritage. Despite, or per-
haps in part because of, the country's tumultuous history of bitter divisions, revolu-
tions and dictatorial rule, the DR has made significant contributions to the musical
world, giving rise to some of Latin music's most popular and influential styles.
Since 1986 merengue and bachata superstar Juan Luís Guerra has won almost every major mu-
sic award possible, including two Grammys, 15 Latin Grammys and three Premios Soberanos,
the DR's highest musical award.
