away as Santo Domingo come here for the daily market. There are also a few tiendas
selling Haitian beer (Prestige) and rum (Rhum Barbancourt), both arguably better than
their Dominican counterparts. The market is just past the Dominican border post in no-
man's-land. This area - including immigration posts and other border control facilities -
are seriously prone to flooding from the alarmingly expanding shoreline of Etang
Saumâtre, Lago Enriquillo's twin lake on the Haitian side (also known as Lake Azuéi),
whose southeast end sits just 1km from the border post under normal conditions.

Hotel Taíno Frontera

1400; ) This hotel is run by the friendly and helpful Pascale, a Haitian who's fluent in
English, Spanish, French and Creole, along with her Dominican husband. Rooms are
decked out with nice furniture and big, modern bathrooms, and the breezy restaurant spe-
cializes in goat (mains RD$75 to RD$300). It's a straight 2.5km shot from the border next
to the new road to La Descubierta - just the kind of place you'd like to lay your head be-
fore or after crossing a crazy border.

Information
BanReservas has a 24-hour ATM and is at the west end of Calle 19 de Marzo, the main
road from Neyba just before it leaves town for the Haitian border. A Banco Popular ATM
is right across the street from Farmacia Melenciano ( 8am-10pm) , on the uphill road to/
from Duvergé. If you run into any trouble, head to Policía Nacional (
809-248-3043; Calle 19
de Marzo) .
Getting There & Away
Jimaní is served by guaguas from Santo Domingo, passing La Descubierta, Neyba and
Baní along the way; and from Barahona via Duvergé and the south side of Lago En-
riquillo. Both bus stops are on the sloping road that enters town from the Duvergé side.
Coming to/from La Descubierta, a new road has been built in order to circumvent the
rising waters of Lago Enriquillo.
For Santo Domingo, Asodumichocoji has a proper terminal near the bottom of the hill
(RD$450, five hours, every 40 minutes from 7am to 5pm). For La Descubierta, it's
