) Set on a rise a few hundred meters from the beach, this Italian-owned hotel offers spa-
cious but sometimes stuffy rooms, though the real star of the show here is the food at the
guest-only restaurant. No gastro-gimmicks here, just simple pizza and pasta well-prepared
by the chef-owner from Verona.

RD$1600/1800; ) This small budget hotel in the center of Paraíso is two blocks from
the beach. Well-kept rooms include cable TV. The simple but decent restaurant (mains
RD$310 to RD$450) serves plenty of seafood dishes.
There's a pleasant courtyard and TV room poolside and hospitality here is without a
doubt more appreciative and welcoming; and the rooms are top notch.

Hotel Casablanca
( 809-471-1230; www.hotelcasablanca.com.do ; Carretera Barahona-Paraíso Km 10; s/d/tr incl breakfast
US$45/60/85; ) This Swiss-owned B&B offers this coast's most personalized experience
in this price range. Six simple but comfortable rooms are situated in a well-tended garden
and have a fan and either a king-size bed or a queen and twin. Fifty meters away a beauti-
ful curving cliff provides a dramatic view of the Caribbean.
Stairs lead to a narrow beach that's mostly rocky but has some nice sandy spots. The in-
cluded breakfast is one of the best you'll have in the entire country. Ditto for dinner -
even if you aren't staying here, consider phoning ahead in the morning to reserve a spot -
the owner is one of the peninsula's best cooks! Anything she does with lambi (conch) or
octopus will knock you out.

( 809-454-5375; www.playazulbarahona.com ; Carretera Barahona-Paraíso Km 7; s/d/tr incl breakfast
RD$1800/2500/3500; ) This French-run, 20-room miniresort offers good value in its
tastefully decorated rooms, most of which face the pool and sea and offer a bit of privacy
on their palapa-roofed patios. It's built on a bluff with great ocean views, and you'll be
dodging free-roaming peacocks along the concrete slabs leading down to a pretty (though
rocky) private beach. Breakfast is served in the French-influenced restaurant (mains
RD$200 to RD$520), which is also popular with nonguests.
