In-Depth Information
( 809-881-6701; cnr Calles Santa Teresa & Las Mercedes; s/d/tr with fan RD$300/500/1000; )
Every border town should have one of these places - for all your holiday hardware needs!
It faces the park and is predictably prison cell-like, with barren walls and rather gruff ser-
vice.
Information
For emergencies, contact the Policía Nacional ( 809-527-0290; cnr Calles 27 de Febrero & Las
Mercedes; 24hr) . BanReservas has a 24-hour ATM at its branch office located at a traffic
circle near the market on the west end of town. There is a public hospital at the eastern en-
trance of the town, near the military base, but really, you are better off moving on to San
Juan unless you're at death's door.
Getting There & Away
The highway splits into two one-way streets when it enters town. The westbound street is
Calle Santa Teresa and the eastbound is Calle 27 de Febrero. Almost everything you need
is on or near those two streets. The park is at the eastern end of town, between Calles Las
Carreras and Las Mercedes. There's a large traffic circle at the western end of town, at
which point the roads merge again and lead to the Haiti-DR border, about 2km away.
The main guagua terminal is on Av 27 de Febrero, at the eastern end of the main park.
Buses leave from here for Santo Domingo (RD$400, four hours) every 30 minutes from
7am to 7:45pm). If you're just going to San Juan (RD$125 one hour), take one of the
guaguas parked just outside the terminal, as the Santo Domingo bus doesn't officially stop
in San Juan. For Barahona, take a Santo Domingo bus to Cruce del Quince (the main
highway intersection 15km west of Ázua; RD$200, 1½ hours) and then catch a south-
bound bus from there. Or use Caribe Tours.
If you are exiting/entering here, look for uniformed CESFRONT ( www.cesfront.mil.do ) bor-
der patrol officers, who can point you towards Dominican customs.
