Getting There & Away
Asomiba express guaguas to Santo Domingo (RD$100, 1¼ hours, every 15 minutes from
4am to 8pm) leaving from a terminal half a block west of the main park.
Passengers wait for guaguas to Barahona (RD$200, two hours) at the corner of a small
orange food stall called Cafeteria La Paradita about 650m west of the park on Av Máximo
Gómez. They pass roughly hourly from 8am to 7:30pm - they're coming from Santo
Domingo and don't have a fixed schedule for Baní. They don't linger long, so be alert.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Ázua
Ázua is the first and largest town you'll encounter as you approach the southwest from the
east, but unless you are incapacitated, sleeping here would be a quirky choice. For those
on a trajectory to or from the Haitian border at Comendador/Elías Piña, Ázua might be a
transit hub for buses to the interior west. Otherwise, Baní is a much more pleasant place to
spend the night.
Asodema express guaguas to Santo Domingo (RD$180, two hours, on the hour from
6am to 5pm) and regular guaguas (RD$180, 2½ hours, every 10 minutes from 4:20am to
7pm) leave from a terminal on Calle Duarte, on the corner opposite the park. For San Juan
(RD$130, 1¾ hours, every 20 minutes from 5am to 6pm) and the path to the Haitian bor-
der, guaguas depart from the small Asodumas terminal on Calle Bartolomé Peréz near
Parque 19 de Marzo, three blocks from Parque Central. Guaguas to Barahona (RD$100)
also pass by here every 20 minutes from 6am to 4pm - it's infinitely better to pick up a
guagua for Barahona at points east of here.
Caribe Tours ( 809-521-5088; www.caribetours.com.do ; cnr Calle Nuestra Señora de Fatimas &
Francisco Sone) buses running between Santo Domingo and Barahona stop in Ázua, arriving
and departing from a small office three blocks northeast of Parque Central. If you're
already in Ázua and headed to Santo Domingo, buses depart at 7:15am, 7:30am, 10:45am,
11:15am, 2:45pm and 6:15pm (RD$190, two hours).
