In-Depth Information
The way through the mountains passes by a couple of extremely poor communities of
Haitian and Dominican farm workers.
Reservo Científica Valle Nuevo
Also known as Parque Nacional Juan Pérez Rancier, this remote park begins around 17km
southeast of Constanza. Las Pirámides , a monument marking the geographic center of DR,
is 46km away. The area records the coldest temperatures in the country, sometimes reach-
ing -8°C during the night and, at 2438m, is the highest plain in the Caribbean. In theory,
you can drive all the way to San José de Ocoa, around 90km to the south (though you
might need a military vehicle).
NATURE RESERVE
Reservo Cientifica Ebano Verde
Look for the entrance to this 23-sq-km reserve on the road from Santiago. If time is lim-
ited, there's an easy 2km-long nature trail through tropical forest where you might spot
Dominican magnolias, the Green Ebony tree and bird life like red-tailed hawks. A more
difficult 6km path leads to a pool you can swim in at the base of a small waterfall.
NATURE RESERVE
Piedras Letradas
Meaning 'Inscribed Stone,' Piedras Letradas is a shallow cave containing scores of Taíno
petroglyphs and pictograms, mostly depicting animals and simplistic human-like figures.
The site is a good 30km northwest of Constanza via the town of La Culeta. The road to La
Culeta is paved, but it deteriorates quickly after that - you'll need a 4WD.
CAVE ART
Festivals & Events
Every September - the date varies - Constanza goes nuts during Fiestas Patronales , a nine-
day-long party that is nominally in honor of the Virgen de las Mercedes, the town's patron
saint. There are live music events, beer tents in the park, and the whole shebang culmin-
ates in the crowning of the new reina - a Miss Constanza pageant, of sorts.
Sleeping
Constanza fills up on weekends and holidays and empties during the week. The center of
town is noisy, with the constant din of motorcycles and scooters.
