In-Depth Information
A lot of people come from the north coast to raft and then head straight back. This in-
volves at least four hours each way on a bus. Consider spending a couple of nights in Jara-
bacoa - you'll enjoy your trip much more if you do.
Canyoning
For those whose adrenaline fix isn't satiated by white-water rafting, a few hours rap-
pelling, jumping, sliding, zip-lining and swimming down a mountain river will have you
feeling like a Navy Seal or Hollywood stunt person. Rancho Baiguate's standard canyon-
ing trip (US$50, all gear provided) ends with a rappel down Salto Baiguate.
Waterfalls
The falls are easy to visit if you've got your own transportation. If not, a motoconcho tour
to all three will set you back around RD$1000, and a taxi US$80 to US$100.
Salto de Jimenoa Uno
(admission RD$100) So picturesque are these waterfalls near Jarabacoa that an opening scene
of the movie Jurassic Park was filmed here. It's definitely the prettiest - a 60m waterfall
pouring from a gaping hole in an otherwise solid rock cliff. There's a sandy beach and
nice swimming hole, but the water is icy cold and potentially dangerous; if you do swim,
stay far away from the swirling currents.
The trailhead to the waterfall is 7km from the Shell station in Jarabacoa along the road
to Constanza. Look for the small shed housing the 'office' for this community project -
admission comes with a bottle of water. The steep path down is slippery after rain and
sweat-inducing all other times (expect each way to take between 20 minutes and half an
hour).
WATERFALL
Salto de Jimenoa Dos
(admission RD$50) Generally just referred to as Salto Jimenoa, come here for the views only
since access to bathing pools at the foot of this 40m cascade is fenced off. From the park-
ing area, it's a 500m walk over a series of suspension bridges and trails flanked by densely
forested canyon walls. The turn-off to the falls is 4km northwest of Jarabacoa on the road
to Highway Duarte.
Coming from town, you'll reach a major fork in the road with a large bank of signs; the
falls are to the right. From there, a paved road leads 6km past a golf course to the parking
lot.
