Getting There & Around
It's only about a 1½-hour drive from here to Samaná.
NAGUA
Nagua is a hot, dusty town 54km southeast of Río San Juan whose interest to tourists is strictly as a
transportation hub. It is the main transfer point for guaguas heading south or in either direction along
the coastal highway. The inland road to San Francisco de Macorís, Moca and Santiago begins here as
well. Caribe Tours ( 809-584-4505; cnr 27 de Febrero & Mercedes Bello) has almost a dozen
buses running to Santo Domingo (RD$320, 3½ hours) every half-hour to hour from 7:30am to 5pm
and four buses to Samaná (RD$75, 7am, 9:30am, 1:30pm and 4pm).
BUS
Caribe Tours ( 809-589-2644), just west of Calle Duarte on the coastal highway just out-
side town, provides bus service between Río San Juan and Santo Domingo (RD$330, 4½
hours) and stops along the way at Nagua (RD$65, 45 minutes) and San Francisco de Ma-
corís (RD$75, 2½ hours). Buses depart at 6:30am, 7:30am, 9:30am, 2pm and 3:30pm.
WESTBOUND GUAGUA
These come and go from the northwest corner of Calle Duarte and the coastal highway,
known around town as la parada (the stop). Departures occur nearly every 15 minutes
from 6am to 5pm to Cabarete (RD$80, 1½ hours), Sosúa (RD$90, 1½ hours) and Puerto
Plata (RD$100, two hours).
EASTBOUND GUAGUA
These line up on the northeast corner of Calle Duarte and the coastal highway and leave
every 10 minutes from 6:30am to 6pm for Playa Caletón (RD$17, five minutes), Playa
Grande (RD$34, 15 minutes) and Nagua (RD$76, 1¼ hours). From Nagua you can catch
guaguas to Samaná.
TAXI
There's a taxi stand ( 809-589-2501) on Calle Duarte between Calles Luperón and Dr Vir-
gilio García. Sample fares: Playa Caletón RD$100, Playa Grande RD$400, Cabarete
RD$1800, Aeropuerto Puerto Plata RD$2500 and Las Terrenas on the Península de
