In-Depth Information
( 809-571-0733; www.alissurfcamp.com ; s US$29-44, d US$33-66, apt US$75-120; ) On the
edge of a lagoon a five-minute walk inland, this lushly landscaped property has small, col-
orful and rustic backpacker-style cabins; larger, modern rooms with kitchenettes in a two-
story Victorian-style building; and, best of all, two colonial-style all-wood rooms with
louvered windows in a 'tower' above the kitchen and dining area.
During the high season, Ali's has a fun, social scene with great barbecue dinners, so
nonguests should consider heading here for a meal. A nice pool and surfing and kitesurf-
ing packages are offered - in fact, it's ideal for those looking for a laid-back base from
which you can learn how to surf or kitesurf.

( 809-571-0455; www.hotel-alegria.com ; Callejón 2; r from US$30, studio/apt US$60/110; ) Hid-
den down one of Cabarete's few side streets, the Alegría may not have beach access, but
from the wooden deck that towers from the top of the hotel you have an unrivalled view
out over the ocean. There's a small gym with treadmill and weights, and the studios and
apartment each have kitchens, but more importantly the owner and staff are friendly, in-
formative and professional.

Hotel Kaoba
MAP GOOGLE MAP
( 809-571-0300; www.kaoba.com ; r/bungalows/apt from US$45/32/70; ) Occupying a
large piece of property at the western end of town, Kaoba is sandwiched between the
Calle Principal and the Laguna Cabarete. Service is impersonal and inattentive and some
of the bungalows carry a whiff of mildew or air freshener meant to mask the smell. Those
complaints aside, there's a wide range of accommodations and a pleasant enough pool.

Hostel Laguna Park
( 829-804-6640; www.facebook.com/HostelCabarete ; Calle Castillo 1, Pro Cab; dm US$12, private
room US$35; ) Converted by its gregarious Italian owner into a cavernous hostel, the
facade of this large brick building, a rather anomalous sight, resembles a suburbanite's
version of a castle replete with a turret. It's a conventional-looking space inside with con-
crete floors, spare and second-hand furnishings, a common room with a pool table and a
mix of dorm and private rooms.
