Windsurfing
Cabarete's 'discovery' by French Canadians in the late 1980s as one of the best places for
windsurfing in the Caribbean - strong, steady winds, relatively shallow water and a rock-
less shore - was what put the village firmly on the international tourists' radar. Once high
profile, the sport's popularity has been waning. Board and sail rentals average US$30 to
US$35 per hour, US$60 to US$65 per day or US$280 to US$300 per week. Renters are
usually required to purchase damage insurance for an additional US$50 per week. Private
lessons cost around US$50 for an hour, US$200 for a four-session course, with discounts
for groups.

Wakeboarding
Kitesurfers swear that this is a great way to develop your board skills, and on windless
days you'll find more than a few from around the world at La Boca, 7km east of town at
the mouth of the Río Yásica. It's an ideal spot with 2km of straight, flat river water to
practice your latest tricks. There were no fully functioning wakeboarding operations open
