COSTAMBAR
Less a traveler's destination than an expat hideaway, Costambar is worth a visit for its
beautiful, palm-shaded white-sand beach with shallow water and patches of coral reef.
Several informal seafood restaurants, including the especially recommended El Farolita
(meal RD$300) at the western end, line the beach; these are great places to while away a few
hours (lounge chairs for rent). All of Costambar's services - including Yenny's Market (Calle
Principal; 8am-9:30pm) , a medium-sized grocery (no ATM), an internet cafe and a small
fast-food eatery (no ATM) - are in the small village just past the gated entrance.
This is a private community that consists primarily of time-share units and vacation
homes, some run down, some half-built and many occupied for six months of the year by
North Americans on the run from winter. Condo associations might rent by the week and
occasionally by the night in low season. A local monthly newsletter
( www.costambarmonthly.com ) can keep you up to date.
A motoconcho from Puerto Plata will cost you RD$100, and a taxi US$17. If you're
already in Costambar, try the local taxi association ( 809-970-7318) . Guagua lines C and F
from Puerto Plata pass the front gate (every 15 minutes from 6am to 6pm), although the
village is a good kilometer from the highway, and the beach another kilometer past that.
