In-Depth Information
( 809-240-6111; www.atlantis-hotel.com.do ; Calle F Peña Gomez; s/d/tr from $85/100/150; )
This rambling and charming hotel is straight out of a children's fairy tale - all twisting
staircases, covered walkways and odd-shaped rooms. The furnishings are comfortable, not
luxurious, and each of the 18 rooms is different - some have balconies and fine ocean
views. There's a palm-tree-covered patio and the ex-private chef of French president
François Mitterrand handles the kitchen at the restaurant. Have him whip you up some
lunch in the hotel's beach kiosk.
Hotel Acaya

)
Evocative of a more genteel era, the Acaya's two-story colonial building sits back from
the beach on a finely manicured lawn. It's a French-owned, tastefully furnished place,
with a relaxing lounge-restaurant, a small spa, a surf school and a half-hearted playground
for kids. Rates include breakfast.
Coyamar
( 809-240-5130; www.coyamar.com ; cnr Calles F Peña Gomez & Van der Horst; s/d/tr incl breakfast
US$45/55/75; ) Located at Calle Van der Horst and the beach road, Coyamar is the
least luxurious of the Playa Bonita hotels. The vibe is casual and friendly, especially good
for families, and the restaurant occasionally dishes out Asian and Mexican dishes. Bright
colors and good-value rule the day here and the fan-cooled rooms are simple, spacious
and comfortable. The pool is no bigger than a Jacuzzi.

Peninsula House
( 809-962-7447; www.thepeninsulahouse.com ; Playa Cosón; r US$832; ) One of the Caribbean's
most exquisite hotels, this discerning Victorian B&B perched high on a hill overlooking
Playa Cosón is the choice for utmost exclusivity and service. Six rooms grace the man-
sion, each different and dressed up French Chateau-style (a Franco-American couple are
your hosts). A Mexican husband-wife team runs the kitchen (three-course dinner US$80),
focusing on simple preparations sourced locally and from their organic vegetable garden.
Rooms are dressed head-to-toe in exquisite antiques, romantic four-poster beds and deep
bathtubs, making the prospect of checking out agonizing - the average stay is five days,
but you'll want to move in permanently.
