In-Depth Information
There is also a 1:30pm trip when demand is high, and tours can include a stop at Cayo
Levantado on the way back. The skilled captains religiously observe the local boat-to-
whale distance and other regulations - most of which Beddall helped create - while on-
board guides offer interesting facts and information in five languages over the boat's
sound system. Sodas and water are provided free of charge. The price does not include ad-
mission fees to the marine sanctuary (RD$100, with a price hike consistently threatened).
As an added bonus, Whale Samaná allows you to reuse your ticket for a second trip if you
don't see any whales - there is no expiration date for this offer. Off-season, this is the only
outfitter taking kayaks into Parque Nacional Los Haitises - a definite highlight. Reserve
in advance.
Tours
In addition to Whale Samaná ( Click here ) , several other agencies also offer whale-watch-
ing excursions, as well as trips to Cascada El Limón and Parque Nacional Los Haitises,
both hovering around RD$2600 per person. For larger groups, most of these companies
generally include a tour guide who can often answer basic questions, but there are no per-
manent naturalists associated with these operators.

Sleeping
There's little reason to stay in Samaná proper and most people booking whale-watching or
Los Haitises trips do so from Las Terrenas, Las Galeras or further out. Hotels don't gener-
ally include breakfast, though coffee and tea are usually available. If you're looking for
