In-Depth Information
One other airport - 'international' by name only - serves the peninsula. Domestic
charter airlines serve Aeropuerto Internacional Arroyo Barril near Samaná, especially dur-
ing whale-watching season.
Other than arriving by cruise ship, the only sea option is the regular ferry service
between Samaná and Sabana de la Mar in the southeast. Cars are not allowed and the
schedule is subject to the weather.
Journey time by car along the DR-7 highway from Santo Domingo to Samaná is less
than two hours. The 102km or so stretch of highway begins at Autopista Las Américas
DR-3 (30km east of Santo Domingo near the international airport) and ends at the Cruce
Rincón de Molinillos, 18km west of Sánchez. The toll road - practically an autobahn
compared to most other roads in the country - costs RD$412 for the entire journey.
