avoided. Guaguas to Miches, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Higüey and Santo Domingo all con-
gregate at or near that intersection.
If you are coming from Miches in your own vehicle , you are better off going the long
way round via El Seibo and Hato Mayor - it takes the same amount of time and is way
less stressful - at least until the Carretera Miches becomes the Carretera Sabana de la
Mar!
Guaguas leave from the entrance of town on Av de los Héroes, near the crossroads of
Hwy 104 and Hwy 103. Asotrasamar guaguas headed to Santo Domingo (RD$250, 3½
hours, every 40 minutes from 4:15am to 5pm) stop along the way in Hato Mayor
(RD$100, one hour) and San Pedro de Macorís (RD$160, two hours). Asochosin guaguas
also provide service to Miches (RD$120, two hours, every 20 minutes from 6:35am to
5pm).
Passenger ferries across the Bahía de Samaná to Samaná depart from the town pier
(RD$200, 1¼ hours, 9am, 11am, 3pm and 5pm). From there you can catch guaguas to Las
Galeras, Las Terrenas or puddle-jump to other destinations on the north coast. Bad weath-
er means rough seas and frequent cancellations, and some of the boats are rickety, making
even a voyage under sunny skies a potentially seasickening experience for those with
sensitive stomachs. Buy your ticket on the boat.
Taxis ( 809-479-3425) for up to three passengers head to Santo Domingo (US$200) and
Punta Cana (US$200), among others.
