In-Depth Information
whole place a sustainable edge. Newer rooms in the hilltop annex (US$10 supplement)
have spectacular views but are less sustainable than their older counterparts below. The
criolla restaurant here is the best place to eat in the area any time of day (the hotel offers
all-inclusive packages but it's cheaper to order from the menu á la carte). To find it, follow
the 'Parque Nacional Los Haitises' sign toward Caño Hondo one block south of the inter-
section of Hwys 103 and 104 in town for around 9km down a nasty road.

14 or so large rooms next door to their home.

recommended. The road is particularly bad until Las Cañitas, from where it's then paved the remain-
ing 13km, although that's not much of a reprieve in some parts. Eventually, the new highway should
extend this far west. Until then, it's faster for regular cars to go around via El Seibo and Hato Mayor.
Information
Sabana de la Mar is a small town with relatively few services. BanReservas (Calle Duarte) is
three blocks south of the ferry pier and has an ATM.
Getting There & Away
Hwy 103, from Hato Mayor, which was being worked on at the time of research, descends
from the hills straight into Sabana de la Mar, turning into Av de los Héroes before reach-
ing a roundabout that leads to Av Duarte and Av Eliseo Demorizi (Calle Diego de Lira) to
the east, the two one-way main streets, and eventually bumping right into the pier where
the Samaná ferry leaves and arrives. Hwy 104 northeast from Miches intersects with the
Higüey highway just outside (south) of town, but remains in awfully bad shape and is best
