(warning: includes brief cockfighting gallera stop) and he is building a small beach bar to

Getting There & Away
The new highway from Bávaro to Miches, an extension of the Autopista del Coral, will
cut the drive time to Miches from Bávaro to under one hour when finished. The new road
passes within a few hundred meters of the turnoff to Playa Limón on the the very eastern
edge of El Cedro. From the turnoff (there are several signs, though none are easy to see or
read), head north on a rough dirt road (a normal car can make it if it's dry; otherwise a
4WD is recommended). Rancho La Cueva is about 3km down this road and the beach
only another 500m. Keep in mind that the only gas stations between Otra Banda (the start
of old Hwy 104) and Miches are in the town of Lagunas de Nisibón and El Cedro. From
Playa Limón it's only 27km to Miches, about a 35-minute drive in your own vehicle -
much faster when the highway is finished.
Guaguas running between Higüey (RD$135, two hours) and Miches (RD$80, 30
minutes) can be flagged down from the main road during daylight hours - just make sure
you are on the right side of the street for where you want to go. If arriving, be sure to let
the driver know that you want to get off in El Cedro; it's easy to miss. Then catch a moto-
concho for the remaining 3km or so (RD$150).

Miches

From the surrounding hills, Miches, on the southern shore of the Bahía de Samaná, is
fairly picturesque. A slim 50m-high radio tower marks the geographic center of what ap-
pear to be well-ordered streets, and Playa Miches, just east of the town proper, looks invit-
ing. Upon closer inspection, however, it's a fairly tumbledown place and the beach,
though long and wide, is not very attractive. The water isn't good for swimming, mainly
because the Rió Yaguada empties into the ocean here. Miches sometimes makes national
headlines as the launching point for Dominicans hoping to enter the USA illegally, via the
Mona Passage to Puerto Rico.
