the entrance to most resorts. Fares run around RD$500 to RD$100 within the El Cortecito/
Bávaro area.

Playa Limón
Playa Limón, about 20km east of Miches and just outside the hamlet of El Cedro, is a
3km-long, isolated Atlantic beach lined with coconut trees leaning into the ocean -
coveted property that you're likely to have to yourself for much of the time. Horseback-
riding tours descend upon it a few hours a day, generally from late morning to early after-
noon.
The rugged area surrounding Playa Limón has two important wetland areas, including
Laguna Limón
, a serene freshwater body of water surrounded by grassy wetlands and
coastal mangroves. The lagoon feeds into the ocean on the eastern end of Playa Limón
and is known for birdwatching; tours are organized by Rancho La Cueva. The other la-
goon -
Laguna Redonda
- is just 5km away, but is more commonly visited from Punta El
Rey.
At time of writing, the new Carretera Miches, a modern highway from Bávaro, was set
to make Playa Limón a whole lot more accessible.
Sleeping & Eating
There is a second hotel tucked away next to Rancho La Cueva, Hotel Limón, but the
Swiss owners had closed it during our research and its future was unclear. Check ahead to
see if it has re-opened.

Horses and pigs
roam this out-of-the-way property that feels like a true find. The 10 large spick-and-span
rooms are sparsely furnished and what furniture there is tends to be aged. An open-air res-
taurant hosts daily tour groups for a seafood buffet, but breakfast and dinner are taken
from the restaurant, which sources mostly local seafood (mains RD$240 to RD$650).
The Austrian owner can arrange a trip that includes a visit to a coffee plantation, a ride
in the mountains, a seafood buffet and a boat ride across the lagoon for US$65 per person
