In-Depth Information
The resort's previous centerpiece property, the Puntacana Hotel, has closed in favor of
its brand new 200-room Westin near Playa Blanca (doubles from US$558), opened in late
2013, where every room has at least a partial ocean view. The complex also includes the
124-room Four Points Sheraton (doubles from US$382), a 2012 opener, poised as a mod-
ern business hotel at Puntacana Village. But the real coup here is the luxurious and dis-
cerning Tortuga Bay (designed by de la Renta; doubles from US$1285), a small enclave
of one-, two- and three-bedroom luxury villas that sets the bar for luxury in Punta Cana.
There are nine restaurants to choose from within the 60-sq-km complex, a Six Senses Spa,
a modern PADI dive facility and a kiteboarding school, among numerous other distrac-
tions.
Eating
Resort buffets ensure most folks keep hunger pains at bay, but there are enough condos
and villas and locals to support numerous independent eateries. Most are in various shop-
ping centers in the area, easily reached by motoconcho or taxi.
The excellent Super Mercados Nacional MAP (Puntacana Village, Punta Cana; 8am-9pm Mon-
Sat, 9am-6pm Sun) is the best in Punta Cana. In Bávaro, the best option is the new and huge
Super Pola (San Juan Shopping Center, Bávaro; 8am-10pm Mon-Sat, 9am-8pm Sun) near Cruce de
Cocoloco. You'll find smaller supermarkets with daily essentials spread about many of
Bávaro's plazas.

(Plaza Brisas de Bávaro, Bávaro; meals RD$250-300; 8am-1pm) A legion of locals flock to this
simple comida criolla restaurant serving - as the name implies - only chicken. Juicy,
perfectly-seasoned pollo horneado (baked chicken) is the specialty of a menu that is
scribbled out on a paper receipt each day.
Meals include rice, beans and salad and you can get out of here for under RD$300 even
if you tack on a fresh tamarindo juice.
